Takedown Status Workflow

Understand the 5 status types and how takedowns progress through the system

Overview

Each takedown request progresses through different statuses as it moves through the system. Understanding these statuses helps you track progress and know when to follow up.

The 5 Status Types

1. Pending

What It Means:

  • Takedown just submitted
  • Awaiting platform response
  • Under review
  • No action taken yet

Timeline:

  • Starts: Immediately after submission
  • Duration: 1-3 days (fast platforms)
  • Duration: 3-7 days (medium platforms)
  • Duration: 7-14+ days (slow platforms)

What To Do:

  • Wait for platform response
  • Monitor status
  • Don't resubmit yet
  • Be patient

Example:

  • Submitted: Oct 25, 2:00 PM
  • Status: Pending
  • Expected: Oct 27-28
  • Next check: Oct 28

2. In Progress

What It Means:

  • Platform is reviewing
  • Actively being processed
  • Decision pending
  • Getting closer to resolution

Timeline:

  • Starts: After platform acknowledges
  • Duration: 2-7 days
  • Varies by platform
  • Some skip this status

What To Do:

  • Continue monitoring
  • Wait for decision
  • Don't follow up yet
  • Check daily

Example:

  • Status changed: Oct 26, 10:00 AM
  • Platform reviewing
  • Expected: Oct 28-30
  • Next check: Oct 29

3. Successful

What It Means:

  • Content removed
  • Takedown approved
  • Request fulfilled
  • Mission accomplished

Timeline:

  • Starts: When platform removes content
  • Permanent: Content stays removed
  • Verified: URL no longer works
  • Complete: No further action

What To Do:

  • Verify removal (click URL)
  • Confirm content gone
  • Document success
  • Monitor for re-upload

Example:

  • Status: Successful
  • Verified: Oct 28, 3:00 PM
  • URL: No longer works
  • Content: Permanently removed

4. Failed

What It Means:

  • Takedown rejected
  • Platform denied request
  • Content still there
  • Requires different action

Timeline:

  • Starts: When platform rejects
  • Permanent: Rejection stands
  • Reason: Provided by platform
  • Options: Resubmit or escalate

What To Do:

  1. Review rejection reason
  2. Gather more evidence
  3. Resubmit if applicable
  4. Escalate if needed
  5. Contact support

Common Reasons:

  • Insufficient evidence
  • Content not found
  • Copyright claim invalid
  • User dispute
  • Platform policy

5. Cancelled

What It Means:

  • Request withdrawn
  • No longer pursuing
  • Manually cancelled
  • Not processed

Timeline:

  • Starts: When you cancel
  • Permanent: Cannot undo
  • Immediate: Takes effect right away
  • Quota: Returned to you

What To Do:

  • Resubmit if needed
  • Choose different action
  • Update strategy
  • Move on

Reasons to Cancel:

  • Content already removed
  • Changed mind
  • Found better solution
  • Duplicate submission
  • Wrong content

Status Transitions

Normal Flow

Typical Journey:

Pending → In Progress → Successful

Timeline:

  • Day 1: Pending
  • Day 3-5: In Progress
  • Day 7-10: Successful
  • Total: 1-2 weeks

With Rejection

If Rejected:

Pending → In Progress → Failed

Options:

  1. Resubmit with better evidence
  2. Escalate to management
  3. Try different platform
  4. Contact support

With Cancellation

If Cancelled:

Pending → Cancelled

Reasons:

  • Content already removed
  • Duplicate found
  • Changed strategy
  • Wrong URL

1:1 Status Synchronization

What It Means

Dual Record System:

  • SERP result status
  • Content detection status
  • Both stay synchronized
  • Updated together
  • Consistent information

Example:

  • Detection: Pending takedown
  • SERP result: Pending removal
  • Both updated simultaneously
  • Both show same status

How It Works

Process:

  1. Takedown submitted
  2. Both records updated
  3. Status changes received
  4. Both updated again
  5. Always in sync
